My wife and I recently enjoyed breakfast for lunch at The Egg Factory in the Crystal Lake area of Lakeland. We were a little hesitant to go – the photo of the restaurant interior on their Facebook page (as of this writing), does a nice job of showing the restaurant’s funky decor but makes it seem smaller than it really is. We feared standing room only. And while there was a steady flow of diners while we were there, the restaurant is larger than it seems in the photo and we did not have to wait.
The decor is classic diner, with whimsical prints and photos and corrugated metal walls. Our server was good-humored and efficient and immediately made us feel welcome.
The Egg Factory has an extensive menu that includes breakfast and lunch items. A nice touch – the specials were handwritten on a 5×7 index card. The restaurant was quiet enough that we could easily carry on a conversation.
We both chose the breakfast special that included several alternatives. I ended up with bacon, sausage, home fries, 2 scrambled eggs, and 2 slices of French toast. My wife had bacon, sausage, grits, 2 fried eggs, and 2 pancakes. My wife had coffee to drink and I had orange juice.
Delicious! This was a generous amount of food and the taste was outstanding. Breakfast food can be a challenge to prepare without under- or over-cooking, but everything was just right. The bacon was crispy and not burned. The pancakes and French toast were good-sized and fluffy without gooey interiors. I’m not a fan of grits myself, but my wife said they were tasty and creamy. The portions were generous enough that we had leftovers for breakfast the next day.
For all of that food, with tip our total was only $26. The Egg Factory may be our new favorite breakfast spot in Lakeland. The Egg Factory is tucked away in a strip mall on South Combee Road at South Crystal Lake Road in Lakeland.
