Lakeland: Silver Ring Cafe

Exterior of Silver Ring Cafe, Lakeland, FloridaMy wife and I had been to Silver Ring Cafe before, but it has been a downtown Lakeland presence for so long that we felt it was time to visit for Polk Eats.  So we stopped in for lunch on a recent Saturday.  (Despite the missing receiver, the presence of a payphone on the sidewalk surprised me.  This has nothing to do with the restaurant, I just felt it was worth pointing out.)

The decor at Silver Ring is no-frills diner style.  We received a friendly welcome and were seated promptly.  In addition to dining in, they seemed to be doing a steady take-out business, something to keep in mind next time you’re looking for food to go.

Cuban sandwich with black beans and riceIn fact, the food really was delicious.  This was some of the best black beans and rice we’ve ever had – tons of flavor without being too spicy.  (They normally come with extra onions on top, but we ordered ours without.)  The sandwiches were well done, hearty, with fresh bread.

It was all at a very reasonable price, with tip our total was almost $25.  For a long time they were a cash-only business but they recently started accepting credit cards.  The Silver Ring Cafe has been in business since 1947 and there are obvious reasons for that.  And in addition to Cubans they offer a variety of other sandwiches and side dishes.  They are located on Tennessee Avenue in downtown Lakeland, across from Munn Park.  Give them a try!
