Winter Haven: Andy’s Drive-In Restaurant

Andy's Drive In Restaurant exterior, Winter Haven, FloridaAndy’s Drive-In (They are Andy’s Igloo on Facebook and Andy’s Drive-In Restaurant on the sign.  Technically Andy’s Igloo is next door to Andy’s Drive-In, but they are essentially the same place.) has been a Winter Haven favorite for years – they opened for business in 1951.  I’ve been there often since I first spent time in Winter Haven five years ago.  The retro sign grabs your attention on 3rd St SW (U.S. 17) south of downtown.  I find the parking lot a little tough to navigate when it’s crowded, but there are nearby options if the lot is full.

Andy's Drive In Restaurant interior, Winter Haven, FloridaAndy’s decor is classic diner, as is the menu: burgers, sandwiches, chicken and seafood.  They also have milkshakes and sundaes.  On a recent lunch visit, my wife and I each ordered the same thing, a “super burger” basket – a quarter pound burger with fries.  She had a small butterscotch milkshake and I had a small Oreo shake.  Our server was very friendly, and this is consistent with our previous visits to Andy’s.  I can’t define it, but somehow it feels like the servers at Andy’s work together as a team more than I’ve seen at other restaurants.

Two milkshakesThe food was delicious.  The only downside to consistently good food is that you can start to take it for granted.  We were very happy with our food and milkshakes.  Milkshakes are always a good idea and a perfect compliment to tasty diner food.  The burger patty might look small in the photo, but that’s deceptive because the tomato and pickle slices were much heartier than we see at a lot of restaurants.  There was ample food and it all tasted very good.

Hamburger and french friesThe bill was lower than we expected so we left a more than 20% tip, bringing our final total to just over $18.  Afterward I revisited the menu, and I think in hindsight that we might have been undercharged.  If so, I hope this review makes up for it.  Even allowing for that, the prices at Andy’s are excellent.  They also have a take-out window if you want to order your food to go.

There are reasons people have kept going back to Andy’s all these years.  The diner offers the right combination of fun atmosphere, cheerful service, delicious food and competitive prices.  Give it a try!
