Winter Haven: Rick’s Bar-B-Q

Rick's Bar-B-Q exterior, Winter Haven, FloridaWe had lunch recently at Rick’s Bar-B-Q on 6th St SW (aka U.S. 17), the main north/south road through Winter Haven.  Somehow I find this location a little difficult to spot, what with the speed of traffic on this road, so watch for the red building near the Andy Thornal (another Winter Haven institution) sign.  For some reason I always think of Rick’s as being a new restaurant, but in fact they have operated at this location for several years, and they know barbecue.

Rick's Barbecue interior, Winter Haven, FloridaGood food and good service always mean more to me than fancy decor.  Rick’s is a rustic place with a homey, welcoming feel.  We received friendly service.  It seems the food is all prepared on location so our food was ready immediately.  The menu had a good selection of pork and chicken options with classic barbecue side dishes like baked beans and green beans.  I ordered a chopped pork sandwich with potato salad.  My wife went for “Logan’s Special,” (probably not a reference to the recent superhero movie) a piece of barbecued chicken with 2 sides (mashed sweet potatoes and macaroni and cheese, in her case) and a roll.  Both of our meals came with generous-sized fountain drinks.

Barbecue pork sandwich with potato saladExcellent food!  Most restaurants put too much celery in potato salad for my taste; one of the first things I noticed is that this potato salad had no celery and it was delicious.  My pork sandwich was tender and not overcooked.   My wife said her barbecue chicken was some of the best she has ever had.  There was an assortment of barbecue sauces at the table to compliment our food.

Barbecue chicken, sweet potato, and macaroni and cheeseWe arrived right when the restaurant opened, so we enjoyed a quiet and relaxed meal.  With tip our total was right around $28.  If you’re in the mood for hearty barbecue at reasonable prices, you can’t go wrong with Rick’s.
