Winter Haven: Tsunami Sushi

IMG0882perMy wife and I enjoyed a special evening out with dinner at Tsunami Sushi in downtown Winter Haven.  This was our second trip to the restaurant.  They also have a location on Cypress Gardens Boulevard, close to Legoland Florida, but we have only been to the downtown location.

And it is an excellent location, walking distance to Winter Haven’s public library branch and Central Park.  Tsunami Sushi has a full menu of appetizers, sushi, and other lunch and dinner options.  They offer bento lunches but only for one hour a day, which seems somewhat limiting to me.  Otherwise it’s an impressive menu.

Hot green tea in ceramic mugsOne last nitpick before getting to the food.  Both times I’ve felt the service at Tsunami was not spectacular.  We didn’t receive poor service, our servers were polite and helpful.  But I’ve had some genuinely enthusiastic service at a number of Polk County restaurants.  Considering Tsunami Sushi’s prime location and top-notch food, I think I would like the servers to show a little more excitement about the restaurant.

Miso soupWe had hot green tea to drink and my wife had a Sapporo beerMiso soup as an appetizer.  The tea and the soup were delicious and well presented.  I especially liked the ceramic tea cups.

For dinner we shared two sushi rolls: a tempura roll (crab, avocado, cucumber, cream cheese, and spicy mayo with tempura coating) and a bagel roll (salmon, cream cheese, and avocado).  My wife and I both love the sushi here, we’ve been very happy both times with the quality of their ingredients and the way the food is presented.  The spicy mayo on the tempura roll is not too spicy.  There is a generous amount of pickled ginger on the side.

Sushi rollsWith tip, our total came to just over $36.  An outstanding value for a special occasion meal.  It was a pleasant evening so we enjoyed a brief stroll through downtown afterward.  Tsunami Sushi is one more in a growing number of restaurants that make downtown Winter Haven a great place to visit.
